In 1779, Captain John Paul Jones stood on the deck of his ship, the Bonhomme Richard. In one of the earliest moments that would live forever in the history of the United States Navy, Jones cried out, “I have not yet begun to fight!” in response to the British asking him if he wished to surrender. Since then, several men and women have served the Navy at home and abroad with distinction and professionalism. On October 13th we celebrate the birth of this all too important branch of the United States military. There are many ways in which you can help celebrate this important day.

Did you know the Navy has a birthday? October 13 is the Navy’s birthday. The Navy was established during the Revolutionary War, but it was disbanded and then re-established around 10 years later. The United States Navy is the largest navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The U.S. Navy also has the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet, with over 300,00 active personnel and almost 100,000 in Ready Reserve. This October 13, celebrate the Navy’s birthday!
